Artist’s Biography: Shirly Louw
I started my artistic career as a professional hip-hop dancer and dance instructor. In 2012 my physical investment in dancing took its toll and my knees gave in. Four operations later I realised I had to play the next card in my career. One large canvas, paint and a little courage was all it took to start me on my new artistic journey. I found a new way to pour my energy into something I love!! Paint replaced my dance shoes, but dancing took on a different form. I use different techniques and mediums to create abstract art. My art is like a dance of canvas. Since 2013 I have done 5 Solo Art Exhibitions in the Eastern Cape.
My inspiration for this art piece:
I have a dear friend who lost her breast due to cancer. Her positive attitude and strength are such an inspiration. Even though she speaks with words and actions about how she will not let this get her down, I could see she compensates for the fact that she does feel sad about losing one of her breasts. This piece of art is the beauty and strength I see in her.
