Artist’s Biography: Nelmari Albertse Oosthuysen
I grew up on a small holding outside Bloemfontein. I later studied Psychology and Industrial Psychology at the University of the Free State. Here I met my husband and made the Eastern Cape my home. In 2003 I did a master’s degree in Leadership Development through the University of Johannesburg. Studies on the spiritual dimension of humanity created awareness in me about the power of the creative process. In 2005 I founded, A “Peace” of Art, an art and craft shop at 85 Main road, Walmer. Later I founded Peace@Heart – developmental and art therapy programs. We are involved with several schools, children’s homes, and developmental programs.
We do more than creative workshops. We offer more than paint, bisque, tiles, and paper. We are a team that inspire, create, empower and live life to the fullest. We do not let the magic pass us by.
My inspiration for this art piece:
Levina is the reflection of strength. My mom, Levina Albertse, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992. Through all the turmoil and fear of this deadly illness, she reflected strength and determination. By grace she overcame cancer and I still have the privilege to have her in my life. She taught me that we are stronger than what we think. We can take more than what we believe. We are better than what the world wants us to become. She does not let the magic pass her by.
