Artist’s Biography: Charlene (Keys) Potgieter
I am a self-taught artist residing in Port Elizabeth Eastern Cape. I work any many mediums including acrylic painting, sculpture, fabric, paper, markers, ink and more! I am always looking for something new to experiment with.
Because I have no formal training, I struggled for the longest time to call myself an artist.
Ralph Waldo Emerson said “Every artist was first an amateur”
I am still an amateur in many ways but an artist in many others.
I am the owner of a creative small business called Kreatief My Lief. This is where I get to live out my other passion and most favourite part of my art. Teaching .Again ranging from Acrylic painting, to mixed media on canvas,, metal embossing , flower making …and many more. I love transforming someone from “I have no artistic bone in my body!” to “Oh my word! I made that!”
I was chosen as a finalist in a National Competition (DSTV – Kyknet) That was such an honour and an amazing experience. Though nerve wrecking to be creative while a camera is always watching. And the harsh realization that the camera really does add 10kg. (!)
I ended in 5th place and I was proud of this achievement.
I have recently started experimenting with digital design and that is something I will be doing/learning more of in the future. I dream of my own designs on decoupage paper etc.
Watch this space! 🙂
My inspiration for this art piece:
Her spiritual growth and refusal to accept defeat. (Represented by the wings and flowers in my piece.)
Her meticulous research and record keeping of every treatment/ doctor’s visit/childcare/ family meal.
Every move well planned. (Black and white chess board design)
And finally, with the help of her God and her people, she rose like a phoenix. (Wings in the piece)
